The Red Booklet Guide to UK Wind Farms

Eleventh Edition 2006

Updated May 2006

Introduction

England
Northern Ireland
Scotland
Wales

Introduction

The format of this edition of the Red Booklet is different from its predecessors, reflecting two changes in the way it is compiled.

  1. The “zones” have been replaced by the geographical areas which are the most relevant to each national entity. In the case of England the sites are now listed in alphabetical order of Site within Region, in the case of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland it is basically Site within Local Authority.

  1. The second big change is to include all three main categories of project( Approved, Under Development and Failed) in the same list. The Red Booklet’s main purpose has always been to alert people in general, and particularly those in high-risk areas, of the threat from wind farms. Sites which have failed are as important for the campaign as those which have been successful, and in the majority of cases the Red Booklet is the only source of information on failed sites, going back to the early Nineties.

The new groupings should help to provide a historical/ regional dimension to a war that is still going on.

Finally, to make sure we  end up with a booklet rather than a book, and because of the vast increase in the number of projects,  I have had to remove the “comment” column. In fact, these mini-reports have been superseded in most areas by the large number of websites which provide updates on projects in their own areas. (See the List of Wind farm Opposition Groups and the links on http://www.countryguardian.net/).

Finally there is a statistical breakdown of of the numbers owindfarms as at May 2006, broken down by country and category.

The contents of the four lists are as follows:

Name

The site location, as near as possible to the actual site, and preferably identical the that used by the developer

Location

In the England list a description of the location is retained because the Region is incorporated in sub –headings. In the other lists it is the local authority responsible for planning

Grid reference.

The Ordnance Survey reference at the ‘four number’ level. In the case of Northern Ireland the Ireland grid references are used

Status.

For the England, Wales and Northern Ireland sites five basic categories are used for the table of statistics:

  1. ‘Operational’ – A commissioned site
  2. ‘Approved’  -includes  ‘Under Construction’
  3. ‘Applied’ – where an application has been lodged
  4. ‘Proposal’ – includes the processes from initial consultation, anemometry, to preparation of the application. In some cases these are classified as such
  5. Failed.- rejected, withdrawn or lapsed

Where details of intermediate stages are available they are shown under the Status column. Undeveloped NFFO/SRO sites in England and some in  Wales and Scotland are classified as Failed.
